Utilizing Germicidal UV-C Light
What is UV-C?
UV-C is a band of ultraviolet light that is invisible to the human eye. Ultraviolet light has a shorter wavelenght than visible violet light. UV-A or "Long Wave" UV, covers wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm (nanometers). It is what is made by a "blacklight". Most UV-A coming from the sun makes it through our atmosphere to the Earth's surface. UV-B waves, with wavelengths between 280 and 320 nm, carry more energy than UV-A waves. UV-B radiation is the main cause of sunburn. Most UV-B is absorbed by Earth's ozone layer. The third region of the UV spectrum, UV-C, includes radiation with wavelengths between 100 and 280 nm. UV-C photons have high energies, and are very damaging to living creatures. All UV-C from the sun is absorbed by the ozone layer. UV-C is sometimes called "Short Wave" UV or "germicidal" UV. The light blue color seen when you look at a UV-C bulb is released by the electrial discharge process. The actual UV-C light is invisible.
